The US Environmental Protection Agency stated that seven of the top fifteen pesticides used on cotton as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens. Traditionally farmed cotton accounts for over 10% of the pesticides used in the world, which further degrade our environment.

Organically produced clothing is safer for the field workers, farmers, and local communities. However, keep in mind that federal organic standards only cover the growing and harvesting of the raw fiber. Once the organic fibers leave the farm there are no federal standards in place for the rest of the process- so many organic fabrics can be treated with harmful bleaches, heavy metal dyes, and finishers containing carcinogens and other toxins such as flame retardants in baby clothing.
